Democratic proposal would prohibit firearms on Wisconsin college campuses

State Sen. Kelda Roys, D-Madison, and state Rep. Deb Andraca, D-Whitefish Bay, were approached by a group of University of Wisconsin-Madison professors and asked to strengthen campus firearm laws.

Jack O’Meara represents the Public Representation Organization of the Faculty Senate, or PROFS,  a nonprofit advocacy organization of UW-Madison faculty. He said there was increased concern after the Feb. 13, 2023, mass shooting at Michigan State University. In that incident, three students were killed and five others were injured when a gunman entered a building on the East Lansing campus.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison doctoral student’s research boat has been found in Michigan – six weeks after it went missing on the water.

Chelsea Volpano was collecting data offshore in Lake Michigan at Lion’s Den Nature Preserve on Oct. 30. It was a perfect day to collect information about coastal erosion until the small research vessel drifted away.

UW student group’s meeting interrupted by people making racist, threatening remarks, university says

The unnamed student group was meeting in the Humanities Building when the perpetrators, who are not affiliated with the university, went inside multiple rooms and interrupted the meeting. The perpetrators then made a number of racist and threatening comments, including remarks with anti-Arab and anti-Asian sentiments, a Wednesday night news release from the university said.

Kristen Roman: From University of Wisconsin – Madison volleyball standout to Chief of Campus Police

Chief Kristen Roman has long understood the value of teamwork. Roman, originally from Illinois, was a standout athlete on the UWMadison volleyball team, recording over 1,161 kills and 1,107 digs. She graduated from the university in 1988 with degrees in both English literature and women’s studies. Now Roman serves as the university’s Chief of Campus Police, and the fieldhouse where she spent four years playing volleyball is visible from her office window.

Chancellor Mnookin said the university is providing support resources to students and employees affected by the march. She said the UW Police Department would also monitor the situation ahead of Saturday night’s Badger football game against Nebraska and would continue to provide enhanced security and police protection throughout campus.

UW-Madison organization paves new path for sexual assault victims on campus

Isabelle Bogan is a junior studying marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also a sexual assault survivor.

“I wasn’t treated very well by friends when I told them about it or by people who knew the [assaulter],” said Bogan.

Bogan said she never wanted to be labeled as a sexual assault survivor. She said she just wanted to continue on with her life the best way that she could. That’s why she became a peer facilitator at Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment, or PAVE.

The university referenced allegations swirling on social media in a statement Tuesday. Radio and TV Host Dana Loesch reported claims in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, of someone having to be escorted into Hillel because supporters of Hamas were rallying outside the building, screaming threats and cutting an Israeli flag with scissors.

Man accused in brutal attack of UW student pleads not guilty

During his arraignment, Brandon Thompson had a not guilty plea entered on his behalf by the Dane Co. court to first-degree sexual assault, first degree reckless injury, and strangulation and suffocation. Thompson, who is being held on a $1,000,000 bond, is due to return to court on December 1 for a status conference hearing.
