Police body cams, surveillance footage led to suspect’s arrest in “horrific” Madison attack

UWPD Chief Kristen Roman condemned the attack during the news conference. “The violence perpetrated against this young woman Sunday morning was horrific and will not be tolerated,” Roman said. “This is not Madison, this is not UW-Madison, the safety of our Badger community will remain always our top priority we will work collaboratively with our city partners to prevent sexual violence.”

The pier, which opened in 2013, has 330 feet of boardwalk and space to dock 17 boats to a series of floating piers. MPD: Investigation on Attack in Downtown Madison

The Madison Police Department (MPD) is investigating a “brutal” attack that happened around 3:20 Sunday morning on the 500 block of W. Wilson Street. Police Chief Shon Barnes said in a press conference Saturday the female victim was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Footage of the pier collapse was captured on camera by a bystander as up to 80 students and debris from the broken structure were suddenly swallowed by the water. One victim was hospitalized and others suffered scrapes and bruises during the incident at the Memorial Union Terrace. It is part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, on Lake Mendota.

The initiative is headed by an advisory council consisting of officials from Public Health Madison and Dane County, members of UW-Madison Student Services, nonprofit leaders, business owners and city officials. It combines Safer Bars training with increased surveillance, better lighting in the city-owned Buckeye parking lot and other safety measures.
